Advocacy & Public Policy
In connection with our mission to promote inclusion and to empower those with disabilities, El Valor also works to educate parents on becoming their children’s strongest and most effective advocate. A wide array of parent education activities are provided, such as parental and children’s rights in special education, and the benefits of inclusion. These learning opportunities empower parents of children with disabilities to understand their rights and responsibilities, and to advocate on behalf of their child’s needs.
- El Valor has developed and supports an inclusive model of early learning for children of all abilities
- Develops advocacy opportunities for families to voice opinions on legislation for children with special need
In an effort to continue family development, parents are encouraged to nominate themselves to participate in the Center’s Parent Committee or the Agency’s Policy Council. Individuals receive Leadership Training throughout the year to support the work and responsibilities they have holding the position in office. Committee involvement includes budget reviews, employment candidate interviews, and local and national conference attendance. In addition, parents are able to attend the City of Chicago, Dept. of Family Support Services (DFSS) Chicago Parent Policy Council.
