Giving Tuesday

givingtuesdayEl Valor joined organizations and charities around the country and the world in #GivingTuesday, a unique call to give back in meaningful ways to local charities and nonprofits. This year, #GivingTuesday fell on December 1, 2015. The day was celebrated as a way to redirect the less civically-minded consumerism of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” following the Thanksgiving holiday.

Fundraising efforts were spurred by a social media campaign urging followers and friends of El Valor to spread the news about its goals. Monies raised on and around #GivingTuesday will be used to purchase a SMART Board for one of El Valor’s Head Start classrooms.

Children from lower income communities are less likely to enjoy the educational and entertaining benefits of today’s technology. “At El Valor, we understand that providing our children with access to the best classroom tools available is a social justice imperative,” said El Valor President Rey Gonzalez. El Valor is the second largest provider of Head Start services in Chicago, after the Chicago Public Schools. The majority of its students are Latino, and nearly one quarter have a physical or intellectual disability. Illinois participates in its own version of #GivingTuesday under the hashtag #ILGive.
