JOB SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Health and Nutrition Supervisor, the Lead Cook plans and prepares meals for consumption in a sanitary and efficient manner following the regulations set by the Department of Health, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

JOB FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

  • Adhere to all areas of the Head Start Program Performance Standards, Chicago Early Learning Standards (CELs), and Head Start Early Learning Outcome Framework (HSELOF) within the Nutrition content area for all El Valor’s children’s program models;
  • Prepare meals in accordance with menus provided and the regulations of the Department of Health, CACFP, ISBE, and USDA;
  • Record the amount of food prepared and served to the children at El Valor;
  • Orders food based on menu and maintains inventory of food necessary to meet the menu requirements of the month;
  • Receive food orders in accordance with the Department of Health regulations;
  • Prepare meals on time in accordance with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) schedule of meals and with menus developed for El Valor;
  • Adhere to all sanitation regulations of the Department of Health, city and state sanitation regulations;
  • Adhere to all CACFP and Head Start nutritional and sanitation guidelines in food preparation and kitchen disinfecting;
  • Wash and disinfect the dishes, utensils and cooking areas in accordance to city, state and federal sanitation guidelines;
  • Observe and monitor eating habits of program participants to report to supervisor;
  • Deliver food setup to classrooms, collect and clean up items after meals are served;
  • Provide food substitutions and special accommodations for children with special needs and follows kitchen allergy lists on a daily basis;
  • Complete daily and monthly reporting of meals provided, food temperatures, invoices, receipts, monthly purchases, and food substitutions;
  • Work as member of a team of food service staff in the preparation, serving and disinfecting of the kitchen on a daily basis;
  • Participate in promotional activities to recruit and enroll children in El Valor’s programs.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • One to three years of job-related prior experience required;
  • Successful completion of Food and Sanitation Certification may be required;
  • Successful completion of First Aid/CPR certification required;
  • Proof of physical examination and tuberculosis test within the last six months required.

SCHEDULE:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday (some weekends and evenings may apply as needed for recruitment events)
