Monarch Butterfly Conservation
In conjunction with the US Forest Service International Programs, El Valor staff use the monarch butterfly as a learning tool to engage families in science and nature-based activities in the classroom, schoolyard, and even in the home.
El Valor has involved parents in a unique way to connect with their children. This project connects with parents through the migration of the Monarch butterfly between Canada, US (Chicago) and Mexico (Michoacán) which is a state where most of our families come from in Mexico.
Parents are offered workshops to learn how to search for them and raise them. Families are encouraged to create home gardens and tag monarchs for release. El Valor educates parents on what plants attract monarchs and create a home for the butterflies. Children are taught the same in the classrooms creating an opportunity for their at home vocabulary to grow.
