The monarch’s vibrant orange wings with black veins and white spots are not just beautiful—they serve as a warning to predators about their toxicity. This striking coloration has earned them the name “monarch,” symbolizing their regal presence in the butterfly world.

Monarch butterflies have taste sensors on their feet! When they land on a plant, they “taste” it to see if it’s the right kind of milkweed for laying eggs.

Monarch butterflies can’t fly if they’re too cold—so they use their wings like solar panels to soak up the sun and warm up enough to take flight.

It takes 4 generations of monarchs to complete their full annual migration cycle—some live only 2–6 weeks, while the final generation (the “super generation”) lives up to 8 months and migrates all the way to Mexico.
