El Valor Featured on WGN: Urgent Concerns Over Federal Funding Freeze

El Valor was recently featured on WGN as we faced uncertainty due to the Trump administration’s sudden freeze on federal grants and loans. This unexpected decision temporarily halted critical funding for Head Start programs across Chicago, leaving organizations like ours scrambling for answers.
El Valor Executive Director, Jillian Gonzalez, spoke about the immediate impact this had on the 3,000 children and families we serve, many of whom rely on childcare, daily meals, and mental health services provided through our programs. When attempting to access funds for services we had already provided, we discovered that our payment portal had been shut down without warning—jeopardizing essential support for our communities.
Although the portal was later restored after a letter assured us funding would not be affected, this situation highlights the vulnerability of programs that serve low-income and underserved families. The uncertainty surrounding future funding remains a serious concern.
At El Valor, we are committed to advocating for our families and ensuring that the children in our communities continue to receive the support they need. We encourage everyone to stay informed and take action to protect essential services.
